Morgan's Wonderland is an ultra-accessible theme park that's all about inclusion. 25 acres of rides and attractions accommodate persons with special needs.

Caregiver parents might say that Morgan's Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas, is a wish come true. The rides and activities are designed to accommodate special-needs children and adults. Parents, caregivers and family members (including grandmas and grandpas) don't have to worry about trekking long distances from one activity to the next because the popular park sits on just 25 acres. But don't let the small size fool you; if you want to join the fun, you're strongly advised to make reservations.

How Morgan's Wonderland Got Its Start

As with some of man's greatest innovative ideas, Morgan's Wonderland (Official Website, Gordon Hartman Family Foundation, 2011) got its start from a vision. Founder Gordon Hartman wanted to build a place where his 17 year-old daughter with special needs could have fun enjoying indoor and outdoor activities alongside children non-disabled. Morgan's Wonderland, a non-profit attraction, opened in 2010, and has so far attracted over 100,000 visitors. Not bad for a place that has so far gained most of its popularity through word of mouth.

In addition to the wheelchair accessible rides and interactive activities in the Sensory Village™, there is a peaceful sitting garden where visitors can spend time enjoying the surroundings. Of course, no attraction like this would be complete without a wheelchair-accessible carousel or a gift shop. Paul J. Weber of the Associated Press shares his information with consumers on the website, USA Today Travel. His article, "Texas Amusement Park Caters to Disabled Visitors" gives specific details on the rides and activities, and highlights many of the park's special features.

Why do Visitors Need Reservations for Morgan's Wonderland?

Not all persons with special needs can tolerate crowds or excessive noise. Long lines for rides and food vendors are difficult for parents and kids without disabilities. Imagine that same long wait with a child that has autism, a youngster who is mobility-challenged, a teen with muscular dystrophy that tires easily, or a young adult who has a seizure disorder. And too, some medications are sun-sensitive, making it difficult to stay outdoors for extended periods of time. Incidentally, the playgrounds are shaded and there are misters to keep everyone comfortable.

Dubbed by its founder as the "world's first ultra-accessible family fun park" everyone is welcome in Morgan's Wonderland regardless of age and/or disability. Visitors won't want to miss the Butterfly Playground, the Starlight Amphitheater, the Wonderland Express Train Depot (train ride) or the Fishing Wharf with water cannons and remote-controlled boats. There's an 8-acre lake and a picnic area too, complete with tables for everyone's enjoyment.

Why not get active and join the many volunteers who dedicate time and energy to keep the park maintained and running smoothly?
